History of Lijjat Papad –

Seven friends started with Lijjat Papad –

Lijjat Papad was travelled by Jaswanti Ben and six of his friends in Mumbai in 1959. The purpose of these seven women was not to start the industry or earn more money. Through this, she wanted to share her hand at the expense of her family. Because these women did not read much, they also faced many difficulties in working outside the house.

So, these Gujarati women planned to make and sell papad, which they could make while staying at home. Jaswanti Jamnadas Popat decided that she and her colleagues Parvatiben Ramdas Thodani, Uzamben Narandas Kundalia, Banuben Tanna, Laguben Amritlal Gokani, Jayaben Vithlani would start the work of making papads. He was accompanied by another woman, who was given the responsibility of selling papads.

A plan was made to make papad, but money was needed to start it. For money, the seven women approached Chhaganlal Parekh, a social worker and president of the Servant of India Society, who lent them Rs. 80. With that money, the women bought a papad-making machine and also bought the necessary goods to make papads.

After this, these women initially made four packets of papads and sold them to a big businessman. After this, the trader demanded more papads from them. Just, what was it now that the hard work of these women took color and their sales increased four times day and night. ChhaganLal gave the idea of making standard papad, in which he advised not to compromise on the quality of papad.At the same time, she also helped train these women on account handling, marketing, etc. This group of these seven women became a cooperative system. It added needy women over the age of 18.

Lijjat Papad’s business had given him an annual income of Rs. 6196 at that time and soon thousands of women joined it.

In 1962, the name of this organization was changed to ‘Shri Mahila Griha Udyog Lijjat Papad’. Four years later, in 1966, Lijjat was registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860. Lijjat Papad, who started his journey by selling only four packets, turned over the year. Reached 10 crore in 2002. At present, the group has more than 60 branches in India, employing more than 45,000 women.Lijjat Papad has received the Economic Times Businesswoman of the Year Award in 2002, the country’s best cottage industry award in 2003 and the brand equity award from the then President of the country Dr APJ Abdul Kalam in 2005.
